Graduate Students Wanted!

At the Department of Pathogenic Microbiology, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, we conduct research on a broad range of medically important viral infectious diseases, with a particular focus on retroviruses such as HTLV-1 and HIV-1.
Our research integrates cutting-edge technologies—including next-generation sequencing (NGS), single-cell analyses, and digital PCR—to interrogate virus–host interactions and the mechanisms underlying disease development at high resolution. In particular, we place strong emphasis on elucidating “invisible yet critical” phenomena, such as HTLV-1 latency and HIV-1 reservoirs (viral “storage” that persists in the body), by combining both data-driven analyses and experimental approaches. We also extend our scope beyond infectious diseases to related fields such as oncology, providing an environment where trainees can tackle medically significant questions with broad impact.

We welcome applications to the Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University (Master’s and PhD programs). Prior research experience is not required, and we also welcome students from non-medical backgrounds. If you are motivated to “try research,” “solve the mysteries of infectious diseases,” or “develop skills in computational analysis and/or experimental work,” we would be delighted to hear from you. Research topics will be designed together through discussion, tailored to each student’s interests (e.g., virology, immunology, cancer, clinical translation) and career goals.
